Art at ArcheanWeb: Part of the Columbia River Gorge Series
The Cascade Mountains stretch 700 miles from Northern California to British Columbia, and the crest of the range averages about 5,000 feet in elevation. But the range splits open along the Oregon-Washington Border, where the Columbia River cuts a narrow gash through the solid rock. The power of the river prevails over the powerful geological forces pushing the Cascades far above the earth’s surface.
For those traveling eastward from Portland, Oregon, the entrance to the Columbia River Gorge forms as the river exits from the depths fo the Cascade Mountains and continues its journey on towards the Pacific Ocean.
Near the Gorge entrance, Crown Point towers over the Oregon side of the river. The historic Vista House sits on this ridge, offering travelers a spectacular eastward looking view of the river winding its way through the hazy peaks of the Cascades.
The artwork “Big Sky Over the Gorge” places the viewer on the river bank below Crown Point. Here, the water, land and sky meet and the scenery rockets up river into the heart of the Cascades.
